Children´s House (3-6 years)
The Child
Self confident, independent, good at concentrating and with a love of learning. This is what happens in Children´s House: a fun, friendly and safe environment lays the foundations for children to thrive.
The Method
Children are in mixed-age groups, which fosters active learning, where children help and teach each other. During the first year, children are introduced to the idea of learning projects and are shown how to use the Montessori materials in the classrooms. This helps increase concentration and self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-esteem. During the second year children will be much more independent, and will continue exploring the environment in an increasingly autonomous way. In the final year children will demonstrate leadership skills and will become excellent role models for the younger children..
Learning Areas
The Children’s House classroom is a three year program and the environment is divided into five different areas: practical life, sensorial, language, mathematics and culture. At International Montessori School children are immersed in both Spanish and English languages all day, and the main curriculum is supported by classes of music, yoga, chess and health and emotional education. Regular learning walks in the countryside and at the beach give breadth and meaning to learning about our environment.
- Binomial Cube: comprised of 8 wooden blocks which, when put together correctly, create a cube. Introduced first to children at about 3 years old, the purpose is to help them understand patterns, organize patterns and forms the basis of more complex mathematical concepts like fractions and algebra.
- Sandpaper Letters: phonetic sounds are introduced to the child by the teacher. By knowing how to sound out words the child can decode any new word they confront. This is in contrast to the look/say approach which requires them to remember taught words.
- Geometric Shapes: tactile and visual, this material helps children learn the names of geometrical and flat shapes. As all the pieces are green and of the same size, the only thing that varies is the shape, so that the child focuses on that characteristic.
